What leads to weight regain post bariatric surgery ?

King et al published the Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery-2 (LABS-2) study online April 4 2019 in Annals of Surgery.

This study is the largest long-term investigation to look at behaviors related to weight regain after bariatric surgery which is currently the most effective treatment for severe obesity

They followed 1278 adults who had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery.

They looked at before and every year after surgery: 21 weight control practices, 13 eating behaviors, three aspects of substance use, and four aspects of physical activity.

Post-surgery behaviors significantly linked to weight regain included

  • sedentary time ( ie more weight gain with limited activity)
  • frequently eating fast food
  • eating when full
  • eating continuously
  • disordered eating such as binge and loss of control eating

These results help show why the Weight Loss Program run by Newcastle Weight Loss Surgery is so effective in reducing weight post surgery and maintaining that weight loss. Our regular dietician reviews and multidisciplinary approach will assist you losing weight and keeping it off post surgery.
