Gastric Bypass Surgery (Roux-en-Y Bypass)
Gastric Bypass Surgery (also known as the Roux-en-Y Bypass) is often the most effective treatment for patients suffering from morbid obesity who have had no success losing weight through non-surgical means.
The size of the patient's stomach is decreased so that only small portions of food can be consumed, and part of the intestines are bypassed meaning that less kilojoules and nutrients are absorbed.
Benefits and Suitability
Gastric Bypass Surgery helps patients lose weight in three key ways:
- Restricting food intake.
- Altering gut hormones to promote a feeling of fullness.
- Offers significant improvements in conditions such as diabetes, sleep apnoea, hypertension, cholesterol levels, fatty liver and fertility.
However, there are risks, with around 10% of patients experiencing minor complications (e.g., digestive issues) and 1-5% facing severe complications such as blood clots, heart attack, or surgical leaks.
Who is it suitable for?
- Individuals with morbid obesity.
- Overweight individuals with co-morbid conditions.
- Expected weight loss: 70-80% of excess body weight within two years.
Procedure Overview
During gastric bypass surgery Dr. Dhan will:
- Make small incisions in the abdomen.
- Insert specialized surgical tools, including a camera, through the incisions.
- Divide the stomach into two portions, one large and one small.
- Sew or ‘staple’ the smaller section to make an egg-sized pouch.
- Create an opening between the stomach and the intestine.
- Attach the small intestine to the small stomach pouch (the Roux-en-Y surgical technique).
Recovery, Costs, and Funding Options
As a guide, most patients need 1 night in hospital post-op, and depending on the work in which you are employed, anywhere from 7-14 days off work. No heavy lifting should be undertaken during the first 4 weeks after surgery, but regular low impact activity is important to assist your recovery.
After surgery, patients will follow a structured diet:
- First 2 weeks: Liquid or pureed foods.
- Week 3: Soft foods.
- Week 4 : Gradual return to normal foods.
After about six months, a long-term diet plan will help maintain weight loss. Within two years, most patients lose 70-80% of their excess body weight, but some may regain up to 10% by the fifth year without proper lifestyle changes. Adhering to a healthy diet, regular exercise, and possible nutritional counselling is key to long-term success.
Costs & Funding:
The cost varies depending on hospital fees and medications. Medicare rebates are available, and the clinic offers financial options to assist with expenses. Dr. Dhan will provide a detailed quote after consultation.
