Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric sleeve surgery is the most commonly performed weight loss operation in Australia and the U.S. The procedure involves removing a portion of the stomach, reducing its size and restricting food intake. Additionally, the removal of the hormone-producing section of the stomach lowers levels of ghrelin, which helps reduce hunger between meals.

Benefits and Suitability

Gastric sleeve surgery is a suitable option for individuals with a high BMI or medical conditions that make other procedures riskier. Patients can expect to eat smaller portions, feel less hungry, and lose around 1-2 kg per week until reaching a healthy weight. Advantages of the surgery include:

  • Preserved stomach openings and normal digestion.
  • Reduced hunger due to lower ghrelin levels.
  • Lower risk of complications compared to gastric bypass or lap-band surgery.
  • Minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure with quicker recovery times.
  • Improvements in obesity related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnoea.

Procedure Overview

During the procedure the doctor will:

  • Make small incisions in the abdomen.
  • Insert specialised surgical tools, including a camera, through the incisions.
  • Remove the outer section of the stomach (which makes up 70-80 percent of the entire lining).
  • Use a specialised stapling device to close the sides of the stomach tube (or sleeve) which remains.

Recovery, Costs, and Funding Options

As a guide, most patients need 1 night in hospital post-op, and depending on the work in which you are employed, anywhere from 7-14 days off work. No heavy lifting should be undertaken during the first 4 weeks after surgery, but regular low impact activity is important to assist your recovery.

After surgery, patients will follow a structured diet:

  • First 2 weeks: Liquid or pureed foods.
  • Week 3: Soft foods.
  • Week 4 : Gradual return to normal foods.

A commitment to a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, is essential for long-term success.

Costs & Funding:

The cost varies depending on hospital fees and medications. Medicare rebates are available, and the clinic offers financial options to assist with expenses. Dr. Dhan will provide a detailed quote after consultation.
