Single Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (Omega Loop Bypass)

The single anastomosis gastric bypass is a minimally invasive weight-loss procedure in which a narrow stomach pouch is created by stapling the stomach, and a loop of small intestine is joined to this stomach pouch. This reduces your stomach’s capacity to hold food and reduces food absorption thus leading to weight loss.

Benefits and Suitability

The procedure offers several benefits, including:

  • Effective weight loss of 75% to 85% within 12 to 18 months.
  • Significant improvement in obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, venous thromboembolism, gout, liver disease, polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD), and joint pain.
  • A minimally invasive technique that promotes faster recovery, less post-operative pain, and a shorter hospital stay.

However, the single anastomosis bypass may not be suitable for everyone. It is essential to consult with Dr Thiruchelvam to determine eligibility based on individual health conditions, medical history, and weight loss goals.

Procedure Overview

The single anastomosis bypass is performed under general anaesthesia using a laparoscopic (keyhole) approach. The surgical steps include:

  • The surgeon makes 6 small keyhole-sized incisions in the abdomen.
  • A laparoscope (a tube with a light and camera) is inserted to provide a magnified view of the surgical area.
  • Surgical instruments are used to create a narrow vertical stomach pouch by stapling the stomach.
  • A loop of the small intestine is connected to the new stomach pouch, bypassing a significant portion of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine.

Like all surgical procedures, the single anastomosis bypass carries potential risks, including:

  • Long-term nutritional deficiencies requiring supplementation.
  • Diarrhoea and digestive changes.
  • Staple line leaks, which can lead to serious complications.
  • Blood clots and ulcer formation.

Recovery, Costs, and Funding Options

As a guide, most patients need 1 night in hospital post-operation and depending on the work in which you are employed, anywhere from 7-14 days off work. After surgery, patients will follow a structured diet:

  • First 2 weeks: Liquid or pureed foods.
  • Week 3: Soft foods.
  • Week 4 : Gradual return to normal foods.

Costs & Funding:

The cost varies depending on hospital fees and medications. Medicare rebates are available, and the clinic offers financial options to assist with expenses. Dr. Dhan will provide a detailed quote after consultation.
